Blog
I have officially been here a week and it's been a very interesting one for sure. I have a lot of adapting to do. First off what I've found is the scene is quite a bit smaller here. The courses are few, very different, and pretty spread out. Nothing quite compares to having Blue Lake and Milo McIver within a half hour drive. I'm having a slow time adjusting from the amazing Portland scene that I came from. However, I have big plans for this place and I really want the folks down here to have a similar experience to what Portland has. Hopefully I can figure out the secret. Something amazing to me, is the community that disc golf has to offer. Here I am in a new state for only a week, and I already feel at home with the people. They already feel like family. I've experienced that no matter where I go; Ohio, California, North Carolina....all across the states, I leave with a handful of my new favorite people after just 2 or 3 days together. Perhaps I just haven't been involved in enough sports to know if it's like this elsewhere, but disc golf is a really outstanding thing. I played the Shelly Sharp Memorial at Vista del Camino Park in Scottsdale, AZ this weekend against four advanced women who all kicked butt. I actually played pretty decent and took second by one stroke to Trina Letting. That's fun and all, but what really stands out to me is I went with only two friends and came out with a handful of new ones and a great sense of community already (also a spot on a podcast for a local, more on that to come)! Still, I've certainly been craving the companionship that my Portland disc golf family offered. It's tough being in a place with few connections and very few people that I can sit and talk about disc golf with for hours on end. I'm pretty sure if I ever had a personal ad it would read: "willing to discuss frisbees for 5+ hours (required)." It'll come along though. There's a few leagues throughout the week and I'm meeting people every day. Also, a huge a thank you to those of you sending your thoughts and wishes and "good lucks" you guys hold me together!! Next up: -Meet more ladies in the area. -Meet more of Tucson's golfers. -Get the ladies fall in love with disc golf. -Repeat I have a lot of work to do here but I'm very optimistic about the impact we can have here and elsewhere for women. Let's grow this sport! Photos from this weekend - Phoenix, Scottsdale, Tucson.
